My favorite stories are the ones that leave you with questions. Not because they were confusing or poorly executed, but because they were so gripping that you want to know more. Nearly everything we do tells a story - of love, or routine, or curiosity - and there are endless questions to be derived from even the simplest acts. These can be grounded questions that expand on the realities of the situation, or they can be 'what-if's' about the possibilities.

STORY TELLING

Looping animation reflecting on people and the built environment

An exploration of storytelling and design through video animation.  Each frame was drawn independently over the course of a number of weeks.  This video was created and submitted for the 2021 A+DFF Archishorts Film Festival, where it was awarded the Propinquity Prize.

My goal for this project was to express my view of not only the built environment, but also the world.  I believe that everything is connected in some way, that the universe is comprised of microcosms upon microcosms.  I want to explore these ideas through as many lenses as possible, which is what led me to try my hand at animation in the first place.

FEATURED PROJECT:

Progressive illustration of a grimy billiards table. The cue ball is adorned with eyes, their is an explosive collision

HOW DOES EVERY ACTION AND REACTION COME INTO PLAY? WHEN DO NARRATIVE FORCES COLLIDE?

WHEN DO WE BLUR REALITY, WHEN DO WE CELEBRATE IT? HOW DO WE MAKE THE IMPOSSIBLE PLAUSIBLE?

Colorfully illustrated interior under a starry sky, being explored by large, human-like figures
Looping animation depicting an abstracted hotel design, starting with a rubik's cube and leading through the space

CHECKING OUT

Ultimately, I extruded and elevated an existing hotel and ended up with something not divorced from reality, but no longer a true reflection of it.

One of my most memorable studio classes in college challenged us to re-imagine existing hotels, to shape them into something unrecognizable. We had to build the reality, and then break it. This was the first foray into Rhino for many of us, but it was also a departure from other adaptive-reuse case studies and exercises. I have always thought of myself as someone who likes to think outside the box, but this was a new test of my ability to reinvent.
